Rift Patch 2.3 & Free to Play

Bill Fisher, the Creative Director for Rift made a big announcement today. On June 12, the next Rift patch, 2.3 will be released and with that Rift will become Free to Play. That means that the whole game will be free for everyone with a cash store available to purchase special items like mounts, storage, role slots, costumes etc. A subscription will still be available with subscribers known as Patrons. Patrons will receive bonus currency and other items each month. An additional currency will be introduced into the game called REX which can be purchased for real money but will be trade-able in game for platinum/gold etc.

Patch 2.3 will finally see the opening of the huge zone, Dendrome. There will be a new 10-man Sliver, chronicle, rift challenge called strongholds and open world raid bosses.

TUG – a Kickstarter

I know we’ve got lots of sandbox fans around here (Minecraft and Rift Dimension addicts, I’m looking at you), so I thought I’d share something new from one of our own! Some of you may remember Klyse from WoW. He’s been a game developer for a long time and last year he started a new career with a rather interesting start-up company called Nerd Kingdom.

Nerd Kingdom is currently developing what could prove to be an addictive and innovative sandbox RPG called TUG. TUG has it’s own Kickstarter Campaign that launched today and gives you an opportunity to support independent game development and get in on the ground floor.

TUG sits at the crossroads where survival sandbox and multiplayer RPG’s meet, offering both elegant simplicity and a world of complex secrets for those who desire to seek them out. From freezing snow capped mountains to dark dreary caves, TUG offers a massive procedurally-generated world to explore, full of mystery and danger — but what makes TUG truly unique is its ability to help us learn what you as players enjoy about the game, and to use your interactions to make an amazing world even better.

The project draws inspiration from fun, accessible games we love such as Minecraft, Fable, Animal Crossing, and Zelda, as well as games that feature deeply complex worlds, including Eve Online, Monster Hunter, and Dwarf Fortress.

New Dimension – Moonshade Pools

Rift has just added a new personal dimension – Moonshade Pools. It is an outdoor dimension and one of the largest available. If you want room to build and grow, perhaps this dimension is for you!

HammerStrike Raids – April 8&9

As some of you may know our usual HammerStrike raid leader Darconus is taking a break from Rift for a while. Since no raid has been posted for this week yet, Valdon, Tiffi and I have decided to not plan a raid this week and we’re working to reorganize who will be posting raids and organizing sign ups so we can get back to raiding on the 15th/16th.

For myself, I’ll plan to be on Monday & Tuesday night in hopes we can do something (either dungeon runs or perhaps the Primeval Feast 10-man Sliver) if we have enough people. Feel free to leave a comment on this post if you will plan to be on as well and lets see what we can do!

HammerStrike Takes on Infernal Dawn

Last night the HammerStrike raiding alliance was well on its way to clearing out Laethys’ lair of Infernal Dawn. We downed Warboss Drak, Ituziel and Maklamos the Scryer leaving only Rusila Dreadblade, the Ember Conclave, Laethys and Maelforge alive. Defiance Advanced Mission Beta 3

The final Beta weekend for Trion’s new Shooter-MMO will be March 22 through March 24 on PC. Some of us have been having fun shooting hellbugs and mutants in Alpha and Beta. If you’d like to try the game out you can still register for Beta HERE

Defiance the game will launch on April 2, and the new SyFy TV series of the same name will air April 15. The game ties in closely with the TV series and characters will appear in game that you see on TV.

Carnival of the Ascended Returns – Patch 2.2

Rift Patch 2.2 will arrive next week (Feb. 27) and with it comes the return of the World Event – Carnival of the Ascended. All the cute dragon balloons, carnival masks and mounts from last year will return along with a new Golden Cape and other goodies. Some new carnival games, one of them involving pie, will also appear.

The new patch will also bring new content to the rest of the game. We can look forward to:

Tier 3 Planar Attunement abilities
Tier 2 Planar Attunement for PVP
A special World Event version of the Codex warfront

In addition, for those of you that haven’t been back to Telara in a while, you will be able to return for FREE from March 21-25 and current subscribers will get bonuses on xp/planarite etc.

On January 29, 2013 the HammerStrike raiding alliance killed the cephalopod lord of the water plane, Akylios, thereby completing our run through Hammerknell fortress. The successful attempt took just under 17 minutes. Congratulations to everyone that has helped on the journey through Hammerknell! A Taste of Akylios

Last night was our first run at the big squid himself, Akylios, in Hammerknell Fortress. I have a much greater respect for guilds that managed to kill this guy at level 50. While we didn’t kill him (yet), we made good progress and are learning the mechanics. I’m confident he’ll be calamari the next time we meet! If you’ve not experienced the fight, here’s a taste of what we encountered last night, thanks to our resident video ninja Arious.
